ST. MARY MAGDALENE, SOUTH MOLTON
St Mary Magdalene is part of the Parish of South Molton with Nymet St.George.
Whether you visit us for a service, for some quiet personal reflection, or just to have a look, whoever you are, and whatever you believe, you are welcome.
This large fine Grade 1 listed building, is the 'civic church' of the town. It is situated just off the town centre, tucked away behind the main shopping street.
People have worshipped here for many centuries, seeking a closer relationship with God.
Believed to be the third church on this site, the earliest part are the side walls of the chancel which are very thick and believed to be about 800 years old. It is not known when the first church was established, but the second is thought to have dated from between 1150 and 1270. The church you see today was built in the 15th C., but was extensively restored in the 19th C.
A church is not just a building, but a group of people who gather together because of shared faith and beliefs. No one should feel excluded because of who they are, or where they may be on their journey of faith.
We aim to strengthen our spiritual life. It is also important to us that we are here for the wider community.
The community gather here for civic services, Remembrance Sunday, and to mark special events, as well as for concerts, and exhibitions.
As inheritors of this ancient building we also have a responsibility to maintain it on behalf of our community, but the cost falls heavily on our shoulders.
We hope you will come to share with us a sense that this is a special place where you can feel God's peace.
The Team Rector welcomes enquiries on any matter. We are keen to serve the town and the local community.
